FlexSea to Catalyse Sustainable Innovation with Strategic Relocation to Wolverhampton

Released: 18 March 2024

FlexSea, an award-winning UK-based company developing home-compostable biomaterials to combat the global plastic problem, has announced its strategic move from London to Wolverhampton. This relocation represents the company strengthening its close ties to the city and brings a significant investment to its thriving business environment, £4 million raised through Innovate UK grants and private equity funding.

Carlo Fedeli, CEO of FlexSea, announced that: “The decision to relocate to Wolverhampton is driven by various factors, including the city's strategic location and excellent transportation links.

Leveraging the skilled and diverse workforce and opportunities for growth and collaboration within the region, FlexSea aims to contribute to the economic development of the city and play a central role in Wolverhampton’s new Green Innovation Corridor.”

COO & University of Wolverhampton alumni, Olivia Simpson, added: “Wolverhampton, the Black Country, and the West Midlands' historical and current position at the centre of the British industrial powerhouse make it the ideal location to bring sustainable innovation to the forefront in the UK.”

FlexSea’s pioneering mission is simple – displace fossil fuel-derived materials through cutting-edge bio-based solutions to develop easily biodegradable and non-polluting bioplastics and biomaterials. The company has already gained considerable traction in replacing single-use plastics across sectors such as cosmetics, food, and medical fields. The novel approach, utilizing seaweed and its by-products, offers a plug-and-play solution, fitting into standard processing machinery and technology used in the plastic manufacturing machinery.

City of Wolverhampton Council Leader, Councillor Stephen Simkins, said: “As part of the emerging West Midlands Investment Zone the Green Innovation Corridor will drive the Green Industrial Revolution, building upon Wolverhampton’s sustainable construction, green credentials and circular economy for transformation that will create quality jobs and opportunities for all.

“FlexSea’s decision to relocate from London to Wolverhampton recognises what a strong proposition it is. It demonstrates the confidence businesses have to invest and develop in our city as a place where innovative businesses can thrive.

“We look forward to welcoming them to Wolverhampton and will do all we can to support them on their journey that aligns well with our environmental and climate change goals.”

FlexSea welcomes the local community's support in celebrating this exciting news. The company believes that collaboration with the community will contribute to showcasing the region's appeal for growing businesses. FlexSea looks forward to witnessing the positive impact this move will have on the local community and economy.
